CANDLE SAND, EXPLAINED
Seen candle sand, wax pearls, candle pearls or candle wax beads? They all describe the same simple idea: loose candle wax you pour into a suitable vessel, add a wick to and light.
Emilie turns that idea into a refillable candle system made to change with your home.
A real candle flame, without the traditional candle routine.
Add the wax pearls
Position a fresh wick
Enjoy real candlelight
DIFFERENT NAMES. SAME IDEA.
The format has picked up several names online. The words can look different, but they usually describe loose candle wax designed to be poured around a wick rather than sold as one solid candle.
A popular search term for loose or granulated candle wax that can be poured into a suitable container and used with a wick.
The term we use most often at Emilie because our wax has a fine, pearl-like form rather than looking like ordinary solid candle wax.
Another name commonly used for the same style of pourable candle wax and one you may see when searching for refillable candles.
A broader search term sometimes used for small pieces of candle wax. The size and shape can vary between different candle-wax products.
Pour the pearls directly into your handmade Emilie vessel.
Position one of the prepared cotton wicks. No melting, hot wax pouring or equipment.
The wax immediately around the wick forms a small local melt pool.
Once completely cool, lift out the wax disc, add a fresh wick and enjoy it again.
It was everything we learned to accept around it. A fixed jar. A fixed wick. One colour and one fragrance until the candle ends. Tunnelling when the burn does not go to plan. Then another finished candle and another container to replace. Pearled wax changes the structure of the candle itself. The wax, wick and vessel no longer have to be one permanent object.
Wick fixed to the base — burns wherever that leads: tunnelling, soot, an overheated jar.
Wick sits freely in the pearls — designed to burn cleanly and go out on its own.
Only the wax near the wick melts, but the rest is locked to a jar you'll throw away.
Only the wax around the wick melts — far less gets left behind.
One large melt pool can leave the glass dangerously hot.
A smaller, local melt pool stays contained around the flame.
Finished candle means wax, wick and jar all go in the bin.
Finished candle means you refill the pearls and keep the same vessel.
One of the biggest differences with candle sand is that the wax does not arrive permanently attached to one jar. That gives you more freedom — provided the vessel is suitable for candle use.
Pour it into a vessel you love, then change the look whenever your room, table or season changes.
Your Starter Set arrives with a vessel designed to give your first pour the right proportions, spacing and look.
Pour the pearls into a stable, heat-safe container with enough internal space around the wick and create a candle that already belongs in your room.
Move from a calm everyday vessel to a table centrepiece, seasonal bowl or gift arrangement without buying another complete candle.
Use only a stable, heat-safe container with enough internal width and space around each wick. Always follow the Emilie setup and candle-care guidance before lighting.
CHOOSE WHAT CHANGES
The candle does not need to stay the same just because the vessel does.
Choose the fragrance that makes the room feel exactly how you want it to.
Choose ready-scented white wax pearls when fragrance is part of the moment. No wax melting or fragrance mixing is required at home.
From clean and fresh to warm and comforting
No separate fragrance mixing required
Restyle the candle to complement the room, season or moment.
Choose fragrance-free pearled wax when colour is the part you want to change without adding fragrance to the room.
Nine colours for changing rooms and seasons
No added fragrance
Keep the vessel and choose what you want to change next: the fragrance, the colour or both over time.
CANDLE SAND FAQs
Candle sand is a name commonly used for loose or granulated candle wax that can be poured into a suitable container and used with a wick. Emilie's version has a fine pearl-like form, which is why we usually call it pearled wax.
The terms are often used to describe the same general candle format. At Emilie, wax pearls or pearled wax describes the shape of our wax more accurately, while candle sand is a common term people use when searching for this type of candle.
Yes. Once used with a suitable candle vessel and correctly positioned wick, the wax burns with a real candle flame. The difference is that the wax remains loose around the wick instead of being manufactured as one solid candle inside a fixed jar.
No. Emilie wax pearls are ready to pour directly into a suitable vessel. There is no need to melt the wax or pour hot liquid wax when setting up the candle.
The loose pearls that have not melted can remain in the vessel for future candle setups. Once everything has completely cooled, the used wick and cooled wax immediately around it can be removed before the pearls are refreshed and a fresh wick is positioned when needed.
No. The container must be suitable for candle use, heat-safe, stable and large enough for the intended wick setup. Follow Emilie's current vessel-size and wick-spacing guidance before lighting.
Use wicks suitable for the wax and setup being used. Emilie refills and Starter Sets include prepared cotton wicks designed for the Emilie pearled candle system.
A traditional container candle normally has solid wax and a wick permanently assembled inside its jar. With a pearled candle, the wax stays loose and the prepared wick is positioned within the pearls, allowing the vessel and candle setup to be refreshed separately.
