The format has picked up several names online. The words can look different, but they usually describe loose candle wax designed to be poured around a wick rather than sold as one solid candle.
Wax Pearls
The term we use most often at Emilie because our wax has a fine, pearl-like form rather than looking like ordinary solid candle wax.
Candle Pearls
Another name commonly used for the same style of pourable candle wax and one you may see when searching for refillable candles.
Candle Wax Beads
A broader search term sometimes used for small pieces of candle wax. The size and shape can vary between different candle-wax products.

How does candle sand work?
Ready in minutes

Pour.
Pour the pearls directly into your handmade Emilie vessel.

Add a wick.
Position one of the prepared cotton wicks. No melting, hot wax pouring or equipment.

Light it.
The wax immediately around the wick forms a small local melt pool.

Refresh.
Once completely cool, lift out the wax disc, add a fresh wick and enjoy it again.
THE CANDLE UPGRADE
The problem was never candlelight.

What is candle sand?
Candle sand is a name commonly used for loose or granulated candle wax that can be poured into a suitable container and used with a wick. Emilie's version has a fine pearl-like form, which is why we usually call it pearled wax.
Is candle sand the same as wax pearls?
The terms are often used to describe the same general candle format. At Emilie, wax pearls or pearled wax describes the shape of our wax more accurately, while candle sand is a common term people use when searching for this type of candle.
Are candle pearls real candles?
Yes. Once used with a suitable candle vessel and correctly positioned wick, the wax burns with a real candle flame. The difference is that the wax remains loose around the wick instead of being manufactured as one solid candle inside a fixed jar.
Do I have to melt candle sand before using it?
No. Emilie wax pearls are ready to pour directly into a suitable vessel. There is no need to melt the wax or pour hot liquid wax when setting up the candle.
Can I reuse candle sand?
The loose pearls that have not melted can remain in the vessel for future candle setups. Once everything has completely cooled, the used wick and cooled wax immediately around it can be removed before the pearls are refreshed and a fresh wick is positioned when needed.
Can I use candle sand in any container?
No. The container must be suitable for candle use, heat-safe, stable and large enough for the intended wick setup. Follow Emilie's current vessel-size and wick-spacing guidance before lighting.
Do I need special wicks for candle sand?
Use wicks suitable for the wax and setup being used. Emilie refills and Starter Sets include prepared cotton wicks designed for the Emilie pearled candle system.
What is the difference between candle sand and a traditional candle?
A traditional container candle normally has solid wax and a wick permanently assembled inside its jar. With a pearled candle, the wax stays loose and the prepared wick is positioned within the pearls, allowing the vessel and candle setup to be refreshed separately.
